Local AI in Spain: a provider market yet to mature
Only 41 technical job offers in Spain mention 'on premise', nearly all infrastructure or consulting: what it means for an SME looking for a local AI provider.
How much market is there really behind local AI in Spain? An analysis published on 6 October 2026 by Shakers — a Madrid-based technical talent platform backed by CDTI funding — puts a concrete figure on it: only 41 active technical job offers in Spain mention “on premise”, with data cut-off at 5 October. And nearly all of them are infrastructure, cloud or consulting roles, not local AI as a specialism of its own.
The report’s own conclusion is sharp: local AI is not yet a job market of its own; it gets hired inside platform profiles. Translated to the provider world: local AI is not yet a mature market of services for businesses. There is demand, there is technology, but the channel between them — specialised companies that install, maintain and explain these systems — is still being built.
What it means for an SME
For an SME in Barcelona or Catalunya that wants its own AI, this gap has a direct consequence: you cannot assume any given provider knows how to do it well. Many integrators sell AI, but run it on a third party’s cloud and call it an “enterprise AI solution”. If what you want is for your data to stay under your control, you have to ask precisely.
Criteria for choosing a local AI provider
Facing an immature market, your defence is a demanding script:
- Where it runs and who controls the data. Ask about the concrete deployment: your own server, the provider’s lab, or European cloud. The answer should be verifiable, not an adjective (“sovereign”, “private”) without substance.
- Real experience with self-hosted open source models. Installing an LLM is easy; maintaining it, updating it and tuning it to your documents is another trade. Ask for previous cases, not just certifications.
- Maintenance and evolution, not just installation. Models change every few months. A good local AI provider offers an update and support plan, not a closed project.
- Team training. Article 4 of the AI Act has required, since February 2025, that whoever uses AI in a company knows how to supervise it. If the provider does not train your team, they leave you stranded at the first hurdle.
- Proximity and auditability. A provider in Barcelona or Catalunya whom you can visit and audit gives guarantees no web panel a thousand kilometres away can offer.
A window of opportunity
The same report that portrays the gap confirms the trend: demand exists and is growing, but specialised supply has not caught up. For SMEs, this means choosing a provider today demands more judgement than it will in two years, once the market has sorted itself out. For those building these services in Catalunya, it confirms the gap is real.
